ENJOY SOME BILL AND IVY HOME MOVIES WHILE I TRY TO SOLVE SOME WORDPRESS TECHINCAL ISSUES HERE AT THE CAFE

Anyone working with Wordpress as a blog platform knows it can be rewarding but it can be blasted hell too. I am having some problems I need to iron out before I can move on comfortably. One is with my Java Media Viewer that I use for my photo gallery displays. I wonder if anyone even goes to those pages or clicks on the images on the sidebar? Jeesh… or if they do if their plug ins and such will even display it the way I see them. God… lets move on form that. In any case I want to have a workable viewer that looks cool and allows the person to see the images without going to a new page. I have some Tangerine Dream music for listening pleasure as you view the images. Once the problem is solved (I am not  a  computer nerd but I am stubborn and I will figure it out by Crom!) I am move on and post again as I will not be plagued by this blasted monomaniacal thinking affliction I get when I something like this happens. After upgrading to WP 2.6.2 I have had a lot of problems and I have been at it for almost three days trying to solve them. Please check out my galleries in the side bar and let me know if they display well on your computers.

For some reason too my site will not load all the way on IE. I do not really use IE but like to view the blog there sometimes to see if it is displaying properly. IE does not like something someone on the page and refuses to finish opening the site then quits. Gives me one of IE’s famous error reports I loathe so much. Some problem on line “69″. What the hell does that mean? I work on the blog in Mozilla and prefer to see it in Safari. But most people in the world still use IE and so I like to be sure things are displaying. Sometimes they are not you know.

On an  up note I worked out some old problems I have been having for a long time with text formatting. My paragraphs and images used to cram together and cause me a lot of extra work. Now they actually do what I want without me putting in these stupid little black lines. If you check out my older posts closely or  my raw looking RSS site you will see them between all the paragraphs and images. Like little ants.

Well, while I work out these damnable issues yet again at 3 AM I will post a few home movies from Ivy and myself here in Kunming China. Nothing fancy but sort of fun and personal. I typically do not veer far from the mission of the Cafe, basically because I have such a boring and dismal life and there is not much to talk about. But I think a few regulars may get a kick of these. Will be back with more horror and cult stuff soon enough, so relax.

And last but least for some useless diversion Ivy worked on a Flash animation of me transforming into a …er…guinea pig of ours. Not exactly Hammer material but I sort of thought she did pretty good for a first time experiment. She is at the base of Mt. Everest (Qomolangma they call it here) right now with some friends. I cannot travel through Tibet as an American right now because of the political climate here in China and there are plenty of para-military police all over the region with AK-47s to insure I do not revert to my rebel without a cause mode of thinking of some 20 or 30 years ago. I am a tad jealous and a little worried too, but it is a once in a lifetime experience and I hope she has a blast.

After note a day or so later: For now aforementioned technical plagues have been solved. Plug in conflicts prevented some functions from operating properly and kept my IE from loading. All is safe for now. The world can sleep a little sounder… for now.

I actually enjoyed the videos… I’m not sure why, though.

Can you just say the hell with Wordpress and go to Blogger or something that may not give you so much grief? It seems like the past few months have been painfully frustrating at the ol’ Cafe. I’m glad (for my sake) that you keep persisting nonetheless.

If your life is boring and dismal, then I’m not sure what that says about my 8-5 life inside a cubicle. The less speculation the better on that subject.

    Your sidebar looks fine.

I enjoyed the videos myself. Thanks for posting them.

Sorry you are having trouble with Wordpress. I’m not much of tech guy. Much of what you said went over my head. :-) Good luck with it. I wish you the best. I hope you get things up and running like you want it asap.

If you want to see a boring life, then just witness mine.

I feel less bored already after hearing about you guys  I guess I am a little more bored than I would be simply because Ivy is away for such a long time. I am actually fine with my simple life but like to exaggerate to get sympathy and condolences.

I like Wordpress a lot actually though it is not for the faint of heart. In China all of those sites, and Wordpress too, are basically blocked. I can get to them to read via proxies. I use a hosted service, or a not free one, that uses Wordpress as platform to work from when you begin your site, among many other if course, including the ones you mentioned. If I just wanted to a blog, a diary type thing, I would be fine, but I want to do and add all this extra stuff and that is where the “fun” comes in.

It is a process and I enjoy it really but I have setbacks. I “solved my problems last night and now have a Flash viewer. As long as the connection is okay all my gallery appears as well as images on my hompepage in the viewer. I don’t really need that, like the slideshow band the youtube widgets in my sidebar, but they look cool as hell, though it took me over a couple weeks to get them going. I also finally got a Wordpress banner maker, so in a a few days you guys will be my first experiments at making some really banners without the Bannerfans watermark and a little more linking stability.

Yes I have conflicts but I really like the site and how it looks these days, and I will have more setbacks, but I am up to the challenge, so long as I can whine about it every 20 or 30 posts.

Thanks for liking the movies..haha. We have some others. I was working with software for a while but suddenly stopped. Maybe there can be some more one day. In any case, they are just home movies doctored up. That is actually my neighborhood here, the bombed out looking area. It has actually changed a lot since then with more shops and development an dis much less photogenic. I am planning to do a few more Notes from the Underground, or personal messages and essays, type posts. I try to avoid doing that in regular posts but I tend to find that I like to read these types of things in other blogs and so do not see why not make a sort of editorial category and post one about every dozen or so posts.

Thanks and see you guys… I am am back to posting now.

Have you looked into using something like Drupal or Joomla? When I was setting up my site I looked at several options and wound up settling with Drupal. I’ve been very happy with it.

The two I mention require a bit more work to get set up than Wordpress does, but I find them more flexible and full-fledged as content management systems. And once they’re up and running they don’t require any more maintenance than Wordpress does. Just a thought.

Thanks. I guess since the whole thing is set up now on my host server or whatever I will stick with Wordpress. I do not think there are any more or less problems here, but I have to solve them when they arise. Issues can come up with plug in compatibility but that can take an afternoon or evening to solve now and then. I have come to like WP now and have invested bukku time and stress into figuring it out so I will not surrender now.

A big issue I have really is paying for the service. Since my IP address is China it creates problems doing money transactions as so many scams come out of here. It took a while last time just to pay, but my hosting service was cool and worked with me. Next year when the times comes I may just pay for three years or something.

Thanks for the tip though. I am stuck for now, but not unhappy.

Hey, whatever works for you. It’s nice that there are so many options these days. :)

  7. Uranium Willy Says:

Yes, that can be a big part of the problem… so many options anymore. To be honest a friend set this site up for me on another URL and I transferred it to this new URL over the summer, and he made the decision to use Wordpress since it was what he was familiar with. Before all this I had no real clue what it was all about. So when I transferred the data via FTP it seemed sensible then to keep WP since it was set up in that format already, and the host company was able to help me move it all to the right folders quickly, and corrected a couple mistakes I made for me. So, it was not like I really made a decision. But I was amazed at the list of platforms (called CREs or something :???: ) that they had to choose from. Thanks for all your help and advice in many areas.
