THE SLEAZY WORLD OF MYRON FASS AND EERIE PUBLICATIONS w/ SAMPLES FROM WEIRD AND TALES OF VOODOO

Tales of Voo Doo V2N2 Cover Weird - cover

Myron Fass was to magazine publishing what Ron Ormond and Al Adamson were to film making, only consistently lacking their sometimes dubious scruples and ethics. His best remembered for his wild assortment of magazines published from the 60’s to 70’s by the company called Countrywide Publications that he partnered with Stanley R. Harris. Harris would leave the partner ship after he was beaten to a pulp for some reason by Fass and would go on to form Harris Publishing who would purchase dwindling Warren assets and then later revive some of the Warren titles such as Vampirella. If you are of the middle ages as I am and thumbed through magazines during the 70’s you probably picked up more than a couple at any one time while at the stand. He covered everything from unauthorized celebrity mags to UFO and occult books that were hot at the time and even gun magazine and some porn titles. There is no doubt that a man of Fass’s questionable character deserves some place here at the Café but details of his life are few and most likely apocryphal.

Most of what he published is lost in eternal obscurity but some titles that I definitely remember from way back in my book buying days are the ones published under his Eerie Publishing company name. The name of the company is an obvious rip-off from Warren and the magazines were pale imitations of the finely done Warren books. Many of the stories were pre-code reprints and artist/writer credit is usually lacking. The covers were really the item here. They were graphic and lurid and unlike anything else on the magazine stand at the time. Truth be told I never bought one of these as a young lad. I was into Neil Adams, Barry Windsor Smith, Frank Frazetta and the other gods of comic book art and design. I found the Eerie titles cheap looking and I could tell the inside art was mostly reprints. I now have almost all of the Eerie titles in digital format and actually do not find them so terrible. I am posting a couple complete stories here. One from Tales of Voodoo, Vol. 2 # 2 and  one from Weird Vol. 3 # 2. I actually like the drawings in the stories I selected and as time has gone on I have to admit I think these covers are just great in a classic exploitation fashion. Expect more covers and maybe some more stories from publishing shlockmeister Myron Fass and Eerie Publications here at the Café. More covers for sure.

These are really cool. Never really knew about any of these. I think these covers and the stuff inside looks fantastic.

  2. Uranium Willy Says:

Pretty weird stuff for the time.

  3. Mike H Says:

My book, THE WEIRD WORLD OF EERIE PUBLICATIONS, will be published by Feral in the coming year. Lotsa Myron in it, for sure!

    I enjoy the Café!

A worthy project to undertake. I commend you. Too bad I did not appreciate these books when I saw them on the stands as a lad. If you remember let me know when your book is out and I will promote it here. My knowledge is elementary here at best on this subject. Will be great to have an actual quality text on some of the history around these amazing magazines and the shady but facinating Myron Fass. Not really that much on the net that I could find on just one cup of coffee. Thanks.

I have a Facebook page set up to keep fans abreast of the news as it happens. No solid publication date yet but it should be 2010!

I will make a link for this post later in the above article and send you a friend request from Facebook later. I am not good at all the Facebook and My Space stuff but I do have accounts. Thanks.

I pretty much grew up with Warren magazines and… these. Still have a full box of them tucked away. The covers where amazing. Silly but amazing. Actually, it looked like more blood was added in some of the stories. Big blobs of blood. Still, for 35 cents you couldn’t go wrong.

  8. Uranium Willy Says:

Great that you still have those. You are right, back then .35 cents got a lot. I remember the added blood splotches. I regret I did not them a chance back then. I was so blinded by the Warren mags and Marvel Comics. I recall I had so few DC comics, and no Charalton or the other titles. Just loads of Marvel and Warren stuff. Here is a Facebook page that focuses on eerie Pubs:

  9. Tim Curran Says:

I’ve been looking for a good source to get these comics in digital format so I don’t have to wear out my old magazines. Do you have any suggestions?

  10. Uranium Willy Says:

I got a huge collection of Eerie Publications from a Rapidshare search. I have a premium membership I paid for there so I got the files really fast. I think I just typed in ‘eerie publications Rapidshare’ and started getting some hits on Googles and after a while found some sites that had many of the titles in Rapidshare format. I got some from a Demonoid download as well, but most from Rapidshare files.

Hope it helps a little. I can spend a long time searching for stuff like this. Seldom comes quickly. There is a zen element involved somewhere.

    Thanks! I’ll look into it…

Bill, I, like you, grew up reading these in the early ’70′s. I was a fanatic for horror comics and I read them all–the Stanley’s, the Skywald’s, Creepy and Eerie…but there was nothing quite as satisfying in the fourth grade as reading a copy of Eerie’s HORROR TALES or TALES FROM THE TOMB etc. and seeing the looks on the faces of my classmates and (especially!), my teachers. I mean, what other magazines had such ghoulish, grisly covers? Where else could you see a werewolf pounding a stake through a mummy’s chest or vampire women ripping a bloody heart from a ghoul’s chest? I don’t think I would be writing horror stories today if it wasn’t for Eerie Publications. I’m really looking forward to your book and it’s high time somebody got around to writing it. Can’t wait to see the cover–I know you’ll not spare the gore! If you get a chance, could you put up “I Chopped Her Head Off” from Witches’ Tales or “House of Monsters” from Horror Tales? Two great blood-drenched tales!!!

    Tim

Thanks for that great comment. All those publishing houses were great and the only thing that kept me from them as not being able to save enough lunch money from school each week to get all the titles I wanted. Actually I am not doing a book. That is commenter Mike H. He ahs a facebook page if you want to get some updates on Eerie Pub stuff at::

    http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/The-Weird-World-of-Eerie-Publications/188004885719?ref=ts

He is a regular commenter here, maybe only one of a three or four to be honest. I am glad people like you respond to my posts that are outside films since I have many interests and have had quite a few experiences with old mags and movies.

If you drop by Mike H.s FB page tell him Bill sent you :)

  14. Uranium Willy Says:

Also Tim, if you have an idea what the issue numbers ight be on those stories you like I will search my collection here and see if I have them and get them up for you.

    Bill

  15. Tim Curran Says:

    Hey, Bill. The issues are:

“I Chopped Her Head Off” Witches’ Tales Vol. 4 #5

“House of Monsters” Horror Tales Vol. 2 #1

Great, gory stories. Perfect for the uninitiated!

  16. Uranium Willy Says:

Okay Tim I will try. Give me some time. I have quite a few issues of these magazines in CBR format and yet not exactly every single issue. I will have to get that disk out later and go through it but the issue #’s help for sure. IF I have those stories I will get them up soon. Thanks for the support and advice.

  17. Jeff Goodman Says:

I would appreciate photo credit for the two photos of Myron Fass. They are my photos and were lifted from the site badmags.com and that site is the only one that has my permission to use them.

  18. Uranium Willy Says:

I will certainly give you photo credit. Photos of this enigma werew not too easy to locate and I did get them from badmags.com and I appreciate it if you allow me to use them, with credit, as there is not much on the net about this man and I think people would be interested. Thanks and I will amend the post right now before I forget.
